Sporting Kansas City Wins Dramatic MLS Cup in Penalty Shootout
Match Analysis Clients Have Won 10 of the Last 12 MLS CupsFor Immediate Release: December 10, 2013 KANSAS CITY - Sporting Kansas City defeated Real Salt Lake on penalties to win the 2013 MLS Cup Championship. In front of the 36th consecutive sellout for an MLS match at Sporting Park, Sporting KC lifted the MLS Cup Trophy for the second time in club history. "Congratulations to the Sporting KC fans, players, coaches, and ownership group on a tremendous season and a well-earned MLS Cup title," stated Mark Brunkhart, President of Match Analysis. Sporting KC outscored Real Salt Lake 7-6 in the longest shootout in MLS playoff history after finishing tied 1-1 after 120 minutes. Head coach Peter Vermes became the first person ever to win an MLS Cup as a player and a coach with the same club having won the 2000 MLS Cup as a player with Kansas City. Real Salt Lake striker Alvaro Saborio scored the game's first goal in the 52nd minute. Sporting KC's Aurelien Collin scored his third goal of the postseason in the 76th minute and scored the winning goal in the penalty shootout on his way to being named the game's most valuable player.
