Only one Mexican club has gone further when Cruz Azul lost in the final to Boca Juniors. Chivas Guadalajara cruised through group play besting Cobreloa of Chile, Once Caldas of Colombia, and San Lorenzo of Argentina to finish first in the group. Chivas advanced past Mexican club Pachuca in the round of 16 and blew by Boca Juniors of Argentina in the quarters. After losing in the away leg 3-0 to Paranaense weakened by the absence of five regular players playing in the FIFA Confederations Cup, owner and president Jorge Vergara sent his private jet with physiotherapist and masseur on board to recover his talent after their third place match in Germany. Taking the field again only 24 hours after their previous match, the full Chivas squad fell with a 2-2 draw in the home leg.
